MEET MEGAN YERXA

GRADUATE INTERN COUNSELLOR

Hello! My name is Megan (she/they). I know firsthand how daunting it can be to start counselling, so I applaud you for taking this brave first step! As a student counsellor, my goal is to create a warm, trusting environment where you feel safe, supported, and not alone. Safety to me means you are in control of the process, and we will always move forward at a pace that feels right for you, ensuring that you feel comfortable and secure throughout our work together. As someone who identifies as queer and genderqueer, I bring a deeply personal understanding of the diverse experiences that shape our identities. I am also dedicated to acknowledging my privilege and continuously examining biases to ensure a supportive and inclusive space for everyone.

I currently offer sessions for individuals, including adults and youth, families, and couples/those in relationships. My therapeutic practice is grounded in several evidence-based modalities, including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP), and parts work. I also have specialized training in the Flash Technique and the Integrative Trauma and Attachment Treatment Model (ITATM), both of which are designed to gently and effectively process traumatic memories.

Before diving into the world of clinical counselling, I spent 12 years supporting high-risk survivors of intimate partner and familial violence, power-based crimes, and bereaved individuals. This background has deeply shaped my approach, reinforcing my belief that we all hold the inherent wisdom and resources within ourselves to heal.

When I’m not working or studying, you’ll find me channeling my love for animals into my volunteer role as a Service Dog puppy raiser — I’m currently raising my fourth pup! — enjoying the outdoors with long dog walks, running, biking, catching up with friends over good food and coffee, or on the couch with my partner watching our favorite shows.

It creates an atmosphere of joy and openness, encouraging us to face difficulties with a positive spirit. I firmly believe we are wired to connect. Connection is at the heart of meaningful relationships and personal growth. Valuing connection means prioritizing authentic engagement and understanding, fostering deep and supportive bonds with others. By embracing connection, we enrich our lives and those of others, building a foundation of trust and collaboration that enhances our collective well-being and strengthens our communities.

Curiosity is a guiding value that brings kindness to both self-inquiry and life navigation. By approaching our thoughts and feelings with curiosity, we explore our inner world with patience and understanding, fostering self-compassion and personal growth. This open-minded approach helps us embrace our true selves without judgment. Additionally, curiosity serves as a powerful tool for navigating life’s challenges, encouraging us to view obstacles as opportunities for learning and innovation.
